Yesterday, June 17, the Euro-Mediterranean conference “Managing Flash Flood Risks in the Mediterranean Region” in Perpignan, France brought together public authorities, scientists, and technical experts from across the Mediterranean basin.
Organised by the Euroregion Pyrenees-Mediterranean and the LocAll4Flood consortium within the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, the event promoted local and transnational approaches to tackling one of the Mediterranean’s most significant natural hazards: flash floods.
Participants from a dozen countries exchanged experiences, tools and best practices through four thematic roundtables covering governance, early warning systems, public awareness, and nature-based solutions. The conference also highlighted key results achieved by the LocAll4Flood project since its launch in 2024, including the series of training sessions for stakeholders, the deployment of the Argos City early warning system in nine pilot sites, the development of multilingual educational materials to improve flood preparedness and the catalogue of nature based solutions adapted to different Mediterranean areas.
Experts from Bulgaria, France, Malta, Greece, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other Mediterranean countries contributed to discussions, demonstrating the value of international cooperation in reducing flood risks and increasing community resilience. In addition, the conference included participation from the Euro-MED programme, which funds LocAll4Flood, as well as the PRIMA programme and the Union for the Mediterranean, all of which provide support for flood risk management.
The event concluded with a field visit to the Corregada stream and discussions on the legacy of LocAll4Flood, reinforcing the importance of knowledge exchange and collaboration across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
