LocAll4Flood strengthens cooperation with the Government of the Balearic Islands to improve flood risk management in Palma

04/11/2026

On 4 November, the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) team from the LocAll4Flood project met with Joan Calafat, Director General of Water Resources of the Government of the Balearic Islands, and Pep Morell, Head of the Integrated Flood Risk Management Service. The meeting focused on strengthening flood risk management in Palma through the application of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). During the meeting, the UIB team presented the LocAll4Flood catalogue of Nature-Based Solutions, which brings together solutions and recommendations developed throughout the project. The participants examined the catalogue in detail and discussed how its findings could contribute to improving the planned interventions at the project’s two pilot sites in Palma: Torrent Gros and Torrent de na Bàrbara.

The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation between research institutions and public authorities in addressing climate-related challenges. Regional and local administrations play a key role in ensuring that scientific knowledge, technical expertise and innovative solutions translate into practical actions that respond to the specific needs of each territory.

This exchange represents an example of good governance, as it encourages dialogue between researchers and decision-makers and supports the integration of project results into public planning and management processes. Such collaboration helps ensure that Nature-Based Solutions can contribute effectively to reducing flood risks while strengthening the resilience of local communities and ecosystems.

Continued institutional cooperation will remain essential to turning research and innovation into concrete improvements in flood risk management.
