The final round of LocAll4Flood training sessions is now underway until the end of November. This series of Training sessions place a strong emphasis on nature-based solutions as effective tools for mitigating the impacts of flooding.
On 7 November, the BETA Technological Center started the series of training sessions in Vic, Catalonia, gathering local and regional authorities, technical experts, and researchers. The session forms part of the ongoing initiative to strengthen flood risk management governance in the Gurri basin.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of a study carried out by AGM Consulting, which proposes a set of nature-based solutions for the municipalities of Vic and Gurb. These measures aim to temporarily retain water and reduce peak flows during intense torrential rain events. Among the proposed actions, the creation of floodplains stands out as a major component.
Participants also engaged in a discussion on the benefits and costs associated with the different nature-based solutions. The exchange underlined the importance of considering social, economic, and environmental dimensions when prioritising interventions. The previous sessions helped to frame the whole challenge of flash floods. In this last session, the mayor of Gurb concludes that:
“We must rethink what the urban planning of the future should be in order to redirect this situation“.
To conclude the session, attendees were invited to the unveiling of a new educational exhibition on flooding, part of a broader set of awareness-raising materials currently being developed within the LocAll4Flood project.
