Flash floods in Elenite, Bulgaria, lessons learned for LocAll4Flood

13/10/2025

Southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast experienced an intense rainfall event resulting in severe flash flood in Elenite, on October 3, 2025

Meteorological data indicate that the Elenite area received over 200 mm of rainfall within just a few hours, overwhelming drainage systems. Rapid runoff from the steep slopes of the Stara Planina foothills surged through the resort area, inundating homes, hotels, and roads, and sweeping vehicles and debris toward the coastline.

Following the severe flash floods that struck the coastal areas of Elenite and Sveti Vlas on 3 October 2025, experts from the Black Sea – Danube Association for Research and Development conducted an on-site observation and assessment of the affected zones including collection of water samples from coastal waters.

The collected information will contribute directly to the LocAll4Flood project’s analytical work, supporting the development of practical measures for prevention, preparedness, and flash flood resilience.

The tragic events in Elenite underline the urgent need for coordinated local action, improved prevention tools, and stronger community involvement to build climate-resilient territories.
