LocAll4Flood is advancing with its third series of training sessions throughout the pilot areas, emphasising the role of nature-based solutions (NBS) in strengthening flood resilience.
In Mallorca, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) led the third session on 24 November in Palma, focusing on the catchments of Torrent de na Bàrbara and Torrent Gros. The event brought together local and regional authorities, research institutes and environmental associations, strengthening cooperation around flood risk management in this highly urbanised part of the island.
A central part of the session was the analysis of “green” and “blue” infrastructure as alternatives or complements to traditional “grey” infrastructure for managing water flows. The study presented by NBSCLIMATE illustrated the complexity of implementing nature-based solutions along the two watercourses, particularly due to the dense urban fabric in the area. Participants discussed the feasibility of different NBS options, their potential benefits, and the challenges linked to land availability, maintenance, and public acceptance.
As a final highlight, the organisers showcased the educational exhibition developed within the project to raise awareness about flash floods. These tools aim to support communities, schools and public institutions in better understanding flash-flood risks and the importance of nature-based approaches in improving resilience.
