Raising flash flood awareness in Bulgaria

18/06/2025

On the 3rd of June 2025, during EU Green Week, an educational event was held at the “Hristo Botev” United School – Tsonevo, Dalgopol Distr., organised by the BDCA within the LocAll4Flood project’s awareness-raising campaign. The initiative aimed to educate secondary school students about climate change, the risks of extreme weather events, and the importance of early warning systems in protecting communities from floods.

The event brought together 30 sixth-grade middle school students along with their teachers. It was opened by the school’s deputy principal, Galina Genova, and the LocAll4Flood project leader, Valeri Penchev, who emphasised the importance of raising awareness of climate change and flood resilience among young people.

The BDCA team gave presentations on climate change and sudden storms, as well as the dangers of flash floods, how they form and what to do before, during and after one occurs. The importance of staying informed through local weather reports and alerts was also emphasised. A demonstration of the ARGOS early warning system, which was developed as part of the LocAll4Flood project, showed how technology can help communities prepare for extreme weather events and encourage them to engage with climate-related issues. Participants took part in discussions and interactive sessions, offering valuable feedback on their knowledge and attitudes towards climate change and flooding.
