In Malta, first training session to tackle flash floods

27/03/2025

On the 24th of March 2025 the Energy & Water Agency successfully launched in the EMCS Academy (Malta) the 1st Training & Co-creation Workshop . This inaugural session set the stage for a three-part training series aimed at strengthening flood risk prevention, adaptation, and mitigation at the local level. The EWA delivered key insights into the Principles of Flood Risk Management and the EU Floods Directive, emphasising the importance of local stakeholder engagement for flash flood resilience. Also, the second goal of the session was to introduce the early warning systems for proactive flood management.

The training session was attended by representatives of local and regional authorities, academia and research institutions, operational flood prediction and response teams and public health and emergency response entities. Participants engaged in a flood risk mapping exercise using EWA’s specially designed Flood Game. This practical activity enabled stakeholders to identify and implement prevention measures in the two local pilot catchment areas being studied within the project, Birkirkara-Msida and Burmarrad.
